Tailwind thanks to "fireworks": DFB women only bothered by small things

Giulia Gwinn and Sydney Lohmann, who scored twice, were more than satisfied with the result after the German women's 6-0 goal fest in Vienna. However, there's still room for improvement ahead of the European Championship.

Almost exactly a month to the day, the German women's national team will begin its European Championship finals. The ambitious team intends to use this time to make the final adjustments. "We're in a process, we want to achieve something at the European Championship," Sydney Lohmann said on the ARD microphone after the team's 6-0 victory in Austria, making no secret of the fact that, despite the convincing result, not everything had gone perfectly.
Specifically, the midfielder criticized the lack of pace and accuracy in the passing game in the second half. Furthermore, the German team could have been "more clear defensively." However, given the final scoreline already achieved before halftime, this was only human. "We've done a lot of things well and are working on the little things. There's no need to overstate that," said the 24-year-old, whose conclusion was understandably positive: "No goals conceded, six goals – we can be satisfied."
On a personal level, Lohmann had already had an absolutely successful evening. The pacesetter, not exactly known as a goalscorer, managed to score her fifth and sixth goals in her 39th international match wearing the Eagle jersey. "I find it funny: You're standing here when you score goals," she initially joked about the interview request after the final whistle, but then immediately added that "it also just shows that you played well."
Quick start as a can openerIn fact, Lohmann was more than just a good player from the start. It took her just 15 seconds to score the opening goal, which Giulia Gwinn said played a decisive role in the first half against the Austrian Football Association. "That gives us a boost," said the DFB captain, who said "the first half was truly a firework": "We can be very proud of that."

However, the full-back wasn't proud of the 6-0 win in Vienna. The 4-0 win against the Netherlands earlier also contributed to the positive overall impression: "We managed to keep two clean sheets and scored ten goals against opponents who aren't easy to play against." For Lohmann, this is the optimal foundation on the road to a successful European Championship: "We'll take the energy from those two games with us; they give us a great feeling. We'll just keep going and stay focused."
